WILL
THEY BE LONELY OR
UNHAPPY?
Will
they be lonely?
Up to 10% of the
population may be
lesbian, gay or bisexual
(LGB). In Leicestershire
there are an estimated
9,291 LGB people,
but because sexuality
is invisible it is
only when we 'come
out' as being LGB
that people know
about it. Once someone
you love or know
does come out, you
may notice and meet
more people who are
LGB.
Will
they be unhappy?
Many parents fear
their child will
be unhappy because
they are LGB. It
is true that if you
have to constantly
suppress or hide
your true nature
this can have a knock-on
effect, which may
include depression
or low self esteem,
however people are
seldom unhappy just
because they are
LGB. Once you can
express yourself
freely and without
fear especially from
those who are close
to you there is no
reason why you cannot
be as happy as anyone
else.
Will
they be alone?
Many LGB people
will end up in loving
and caring relationships.
Some relationships
may be short but
others may be long
term. Because there
are no 'rules' for
a lesbian or gay
relationship, it
can often take a
while to figure out
what we want from
a relationship and
because we cannot
marry it is more
difficult to define
a lasting relationship.
Some people may not
wish to get involved
in a relationship,
but there are many
ways to meet other
people with the same
type of difference,
pubs, clubs and groups
that we can join
and visit to make
new friends.
